Welcome to the Fairway House
Please enjoy our home as we do… enjoy the pleasant views, the quiet of nature and the convenience of being only 5 minutes walking from the beach and 5 minutes driving from the amenities of town! There are rack cards of local businesses in the bowl on the coffee table as well as a few books written by Salt Spring authors.
A few Tips & Guidelines for the Household: Entering the Property: Please enter 129 Fairway from the gravel road easement access at all times. The other tenant will enter the property from the large gates on the other side. This will ensure more privacy for both parties.
Mulch Path: The surface can be uneven, so please watch your step! The House:
Downstairs Bathroom:  There is a fan located near the mirror in the downstairs bathroom. Please use it after showers or to reduce ‘bathroom sounds’ etc.
Stairs: Careful on the stairs! They can be slippery!
Floors: Please respect and care for the ‘softwood’ floors. (Fir). They scratch and stain very easily.
Lamps in Bedrooms: The top plug-ins in the bedrooms are wired to the light switches, so when the switch is up, the lamp will have availability to turn on, if the light switch is off, then it can’t be turned on.
Extra Linens: Please help yourselves to extra linens located in the first floor bedroom closet. Washing, drying and making up the beds are your responsibility if you are staying here more than a week.
Dining Table: There are 2 table cloths for the table. Please rotate them as necessary. The wood of the table top isn’t sealed, so can get damaged easily. The second table cloth is hanging on a hanger in the closet beside the kitchen.
Kitchen: You should find everything you need in the kitchen. Please help yourself to the spices in the basket and the condiments in the fridge. Recycling: Please put your recyclables under the kitchen sink in the purple bin.
House Plants: Please feel free to water the few living house plants we have! There are also some fake ones… I’m better with the silk varieties. Piano: Play to your heart’s content! But please be gentle, it’s over 100 years old.
Baby Gate: There’s a baby gate available, its home is tucked in by the washing machine. Please use it as necessary.
The Art: Please be careful around the art on the walls… most of it is original. If you’re interested in similar pieces, please visit Pegasus Gallery of Canadian Art (www.pegasusgallery.ca) downtown in the Mouat’s  building where Home Hardware and Fever Tree are located.Phonebook: There is a local phonebook under the phone in the kitchen. Very handy if you’re wondering about businesses and services etc. Water Consumption: Please try to keep showers and water consumption to a minimum. Even though we’re surrounded by water on this island, it still adds up! Thanks.
Contraptions:
TV: To turn on TV, take Shaw Remote and push TV button and Power and CBL button and Power. Both should be on! To change channels: Press the guide button and move up and down with arrows on remote. Once you find a show, Press middle OK button.
DVD Player: To use the DVD player, press “power” on the grey DVD remote. Press “video source” on the shaw remote 4 times to select “input 3” on the television. The DVD remote needs to pressed HARD and is rather unresponsive but the batteries are new and it does work with a little patience. Press “video source” on the shaw remote once to select “input 4” to watch television again.
Wifi Network: Fairway Retreat  Wifi Password: fairwayhouseWashing Machine:  Put liquid soap in pull out drawer at the top left of machine. Close drawer. Press Power. Turn dial to setting of preference. Press ‘Play’.
Dryer: Put dryer sheet  in with clothes. Press power. Turn dial to appropriate settings. Often times, I select ‘More Time’as sometimes stuff comes out a little damp. Please empty dryer tray after every usage.
Dishwasher:  Looks old but works great! Leave the button settings as they are and crank the dial to ‘A’. Takes about 40 min. Use Cascade powder. Microwave:  Careful, it’s powerful!  1minute and 45 seconds will usually heat any meal through. Popcorn usually cooks in less than 2 minutes.

The Yard:
Outdoor Plants and Grass: The tenant from the other building, named Tim, will be tending to the grass and will come and water the outdoor plants every few days. Please feel free to say ‘Hi’, he’s a nice guy. Bonfires: Due to the high risk of forest fires in the summer months on Salt Spring, it is prohibited to have large bonfires.
BBQ: It looks old, but it works great with an even heat! Please use with caution. Please replace propane as needed. The starter is now broken, so please use the long lighter that’s provided.
Gates: Please keep both sets of gates closed after entering or leaving. The large set of gates must be either opened fully or closed fully and the canes set in either set of holes. (the hinges can’t support the doors when they are in ‘limbo’) But, please access the house through the smaller lattice gates. They must be latched at all times due to deer and other animals getting in the yard and eating the plants!
Deer & Rabbits: If you want a close up and personal experience with deer, just leave the lattice gate open for an hour or two. Somehow, the deer know it’s open and come right in! Just please monitor them while they’re in the yard and make sure they don’t eat my plantings. (hedges are OK) The deer are usually very tame and you can get pretty close to them. Be careful of the bucks, as you never know what they’ll do! Chase them out when you’re done ‘fawning’ over them, they usually know how to get out the gate they came in. Smart!
Rabbits just come and go as they please. There are two usually around the yard somewhere. If you sit at the dining room table, they usually make an appearance.
